With the increasing demand of diesel cars in India Honda is facing a challenge with its petrol variants. In order to keep up with the demand and popularity in the growing automobile industry Honda is all set to launch diesel and automatic versions of its cars in 2013.the demand for diesel cars has increased significantly due to sudden increase in the petrol prices. This difference in the prices has triggered a substantial shift in the preference among car buyers for diesel vehicles. The company was earlier set to launch its diesel cars in India in 2014 but as the market for petrol cars in India is low due to increase in petrol prices by the government, auto major has proponed the launch.
If media report s is to be believed then Honda will be launching three new models in the coming festive season in 2013.these models would be Honda brio sedan diesel, brio automatic and Honda city sedan. Also adding to these, Honda India is planning to launch Honda jazz in diesel variant which is included in the hatchback segment. According to the recent auto industry figures it is seen that the demand and sale for Honda cars in India has declined for the year 2011-12 as compared to that of 2010-11; the average sales fell over by 8.46% in 2011-12 in comparison to 2010-11.
The Honda’s problems were compounded by considerable increase in petrol prices and the Indian diesel subsidy posed to be a roadblock in its success. The retail price of petrol has increased by 33 per cent but diesel price has recorded an increase of 8 per cent only in the last 16 months. The main problem is that at present Honda does not have a diesel engine that is suitable for the needs of the Indian market but is working on such a engine, as a result of which its rivalry groups such as general motors (GM) and Volkswagen have seen an appreciable rise in their respective sales- Honda finds itself left behind others.
Relating to the recent figures for the car sales in India it is seen that the sale of diesel car has increased by 35% but the petrol car sales has decreased by 15% during the last financial year, thanks to the substantial increase in petrol prices.
With these launches the auto major is planning to launch six new cars in the Indian automobile market. Honda is well-known for its name and has good reputation in the auto market for its reliability and quality products it offers. The company is identified by production of some of the best cars in the world but it has continuously failed at appropriate pricing of its products in the Indian market, adding to the concern. Honda brio automatic which is to be launched in this festive season offers sufficient seating capacity for 5 passengers; the drivability in city is impressive, thanks to its 1.2l i-VTEC engine which results in a fuel sufficient ride offering impressive mileage.
