Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL), a subsidiary of the Honda Motor Company Japan has recently changed its name. Earlier it was known as Honda Siel Cars Limited (HSCL) is now Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL). Honda Siel Cars India Ltd began its operations in December 1995 in a joint venture of Usha International of Siddharth Shriram Group and Honda Motor Company . It changed its name after buying its sixteen years old joint venture partner, Usha International Limited. The name change is done with immediate effect as registrar of companies, NCT of Delhi and Haryana issued it fresh certificate of Incorporation. While Hironori Kanayama, CEO & President, Honda Cars India Limited was speaking on the development of the company he said that Honda’s superior technology, quality, performance and ownership experience gives customers a next level of satisfaction and it is what has endeared this brand to our customers since it originated and same philosophy will be followed in the future also.”
Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) had earlier announced that Honda had purchased the 3.16% Siel owned by Usha international by paying Rs. 100 a share, by making the complete sale worth Rs. 180 crore. Now just like Honda two-wheelers (earlier known as Hero Honda), Honda Cars India Limited is now also a completely owned subsidiary of Honda Motors Company, Japan.
Now the Production facilities of Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) operate at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. In 2010 the total investment of the company in production facilities was over 16.2 billion.
Company’s First Manufacturing unit commenced its operations in 1997 at Greater Noida Unit with the investment of over Rs. 4.5 billion. This plant is spread over 150 acres with the initial capacity of the plant 30,000 cars which is now increased to 1, 00,000 cars in two shift basis.
The company also invested Rs. 7.8 billion in its second production plant at Bhiwadi Rajasthan. It has production capacity of 50,000 cars. This plant is operating under the ISO14001 standard for environment management and ISO 9001 standard for quality management.
In India Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL), produces following five vehicles for export and local market and imports one vehicle for sale in India – Honda City is a subcompact car manufactured by Honda since 1981 but launched in India in 1998.
- Honda Accord is manufactured since 1976 but was launched in India in 2001.
- Honda Civic is a subcompact car introduced in 1972 but launched in India in 2006.
- Honda Jazz also known as Honda Fit is a five door subcompact hatchback car manufactured by Honda introduced in 2001 and launched in India in 2009.
- Honda Brio means cheerful in Italian is also a hatchback subcompact manufactured by Honda in Thailand and India was first shown in 2010.
- Honda CR-V that is imported for sale in the local market. It is a compact SUV and manufactured since 1995 by Honda.
