Honda’s latest compact MUV which has made its debut in Detroit’s International Auto Show in early 2013 is likely to be launched worldwide in 2014. The car’s patent photographs have been released online to generate excitement. Market reports also state that the final model will be officially shown in Tokyo Motor Show to be held later this year. From the photos posted online one can deduce that this car is based on Honda’s “Global Compact Series” platform like their new generation cars Jazz and Honda City.
The car has an elongated body and would be a six-seater similar to Maruti Suzuki’s soon to be launched Maruti’s XA Alpha. Honda’s Urban SUV will be based on its popular Jazz sedan car’s platform and may be launched in India only by 2015. From the patent images of Honda Urban SUV car available online it is obvious that its style cues are based on Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology and will have foldable rear seat to increase existing boot space if required. The Honda Urban SUV is likely to be priced in INR 10 – 12 lakhs category which is on par with SUV’s of Nissan, Renault, Mahindra and Toyota to give these established models a run for their money. The car will be manufactured at Mexico for American markets while the ones to be sold in Asia will be manufactured in Japan.
Design Concept of Honda Urban SUV – The new Honda SUV’s design concept is shorter and more compact than its existing Honda CR-V sedan making it suitable for city traffic and rough terrain. Based on Honda’s patent center-tank layout the Honda Urban has a configurable “Magic Seat” which is foldable to accommodate cargo or passengers. The Honda Urban will have sloping hood and hatchback like rear with a low loading area. The photos depict sloping glass surface on sides to give this car a saloon like appearance without a separate window for last row passenger. Its elongated body picture shots have thrown up expectations that it is likely to be almost nine inches shorter than Honda CR-V with a squat body and low roof line.
The Honda Urban SUV’s front grille has its latest H design logo which is also present in new Jazz. Its rear door handle is not clearly visible to naked eye since it has been placed on the window sill similar to Chevrolet Beat thereby giving the door an unblemished appearance. Its interiors will be a crossover between Honda Jazz and CR-V cars with various seating dimensions and positions available to passengers. The car’s headlights and fog lights are designed like eyelets giving them a sharp new look.
Expected Engine specifications – Since the Honda Urban SUV will be introduced both as diesel and petrol variants in India it will have 1.4 liter iVTEC petrol engine and Honda Civic’s 1.6 liter iDTEC engine with seven speed double-clutch gear box. In keeping with its “Earth Dreams” Technology, the new Honda Urban SUV will have fuel efficient engines to provide mileage of 10 – 12 kmpl due to compact and aerodynamic body design.
