Ever since the launch and the astral success of the Amaze compact sedan, Honda Cars India has not looked back. The Japanese auto major has since planned its constant new car attack on the Indian car market to ensure a spiraling sales chart and aim for the top spot in the industry. Apart from the newly launched all new City sedan with its diesel counterpart, and the upcoming Mobilio MPV and 2014 Jazz hatchback, Honda has plans to launch many more new cars up its sleeves.
One of the most important car segments in India recently is the extremely popular and potential compact SUV segment. All the car makers are eager to launch their own compact SUV representative in India and Honda is definitely contemplating the same. Earlier it was heavily speculated that Honda India will be bringing in its new Vezel SUV in India in the coming year. However now, it is known that the Japanese car maker has different plans for India. Instead of the Vezel compact SUV which is not a sub-4 meter model, Honda is planning to bring in another sub-4 meter SUV model to compete in the Indian car market.
Honda Cars India’s president and CEO, Hirnori Kanayama has also recently revealed that the company is developing a compact SUV model for India and that it will be offered for sale within the next year or the year following that.
In an interview with a leading Indian journal, Kanayama revealed that the company is planning for a sub-4 meter SUV in order to get the tax benefits and thus price the car affordably. He added that the company has not yet specified the new model’s positioning, but it will certainly be placed below the Honda CR-V.
Kanayama has not mentioned anything about the crossover concept that the company has announced for the 2014 Auto Expo, it is very obvious that this is the concept that will actually hit the production and finally be offered for sale in India.
Honda has already announced its exhibit lineup for the fast nearing Auto Expo. The lineup includes a SUV creative study concept model named the Vision XS-1. This is the concept that will eventually become the Honda compact in India, and it is expected to be a Brio based compact SUV from Honda. This concept will have its world premiere at the Indian Expo.
Kanayama has also confirmed in the interview that the Mobilio MPV and the 2014 Jazz hatchback will launch in India in the coming financial year.
He also added that Honda is planning to expand its dealership footprint in India and expects to cover 110 cities with the month of March this year. The sub-urban cities are also the focus of the company. Kanayama has revealed his viewpoint that despite the highly competitive market situation of India, the auto industry is not expected to recover any soon. He also mentioned that Honda is going to be focused to increase its sales in India.
