Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was enjoying the sales by targeting the people looking for a decent family car but then Honda Mobilio came in to turn things around. Honda has done a really good job at making a MPV here and has really scared Maruti Suzuki with the new bombshell. The Honda Mobilio looks better than the Ertiga, has got better engines, has got better legroom and is more of a driver’s car. So it clearly seems to be the better car, right? Or is there more to it? Well it isn’t exactly the case and Ertiga holds its end very well. We see how these two cars perform against each other.

If we talk about exterior styling, the people at Honda have done a nice job. Even though it is based on the Brio hatchback, there are some differences which give it a better look. Obviously it is longer than the hatchback but it is a longer than many other MPVs. Some nice lines flow along the sides giving it a rather impressive look instead of a plain design. The Ertiga is based on the Swift platform. It is wider and higher than the Mobilio. It looks pretty decent and the overall design is conservative like any other MPV. It hasn’t got any prominent styling elements like the sharp T shaped tail lamps on Mobilio.

Inside the Ertiga gets a familiar dashboard. This is carried from the car it is based on and it is the exact same story with Mobilio. While the Ertiga’s dashboard follows slightly different colour scheme, you will find it more appealing as compared to the relatively dull Honda dashboard. Also the music system unit isn’t neatly integrated into the dashboard on Mobilio. But there are no compromises on quality or usability. The seats of Ertiga are a bit more supportive and would definitely prove to be better on a longer drive as compared to the Mobilio’s seats. The ride quality and handling of both the cars is pretty good though the Mobilio feels slightly better due to lower height.

Diesel engines contribute a lot to the sales of any vehicle in Indian market and in case of MPVs, the number of people picking petrol engine is even lower. The Ertiga comes with 1.3 litre Fiat Multijet diesel engine. It generates a peak power of 90 bhp. While the car is nice to drive on highways, it is a bit tricky in the city because of the turbo lag. The gearbox is pretty impressive though. The 1.4 petrol generates the same amount of power and is nice to drive. The noise is well insulated even in the diesel variant. The Mobilio is a bit louder and has got a 1.5 litre diesel powering it. It generates a peak power of 100 bhp which make driving it effortless. The petrol engine is shared with the Honda City and it generates peak power of 118 bhp. So the Mobilio makes more sense but it wins by just a little margin. The Ertiga is available with a lower price tag and there are some nice deals that you can find. It also comes with the Maruti Suzuki badge which works wonders in the Indian market.
