Japanese car major, Honda Motor may be an expert in making super stylish premium quality car models that are hugely popular in the world. However, the car maker has not been great till now, when it comes to environment friendly vehicles. While the US car market is full of great eco-friendly cars from many global majors, Honda offers no plug-in hybrid or even battery operated electric models in the market. The only Honda hybrid that sells in the US is the Honda CR-Z.
Even the Honda CR-Z sells in poor numbers, as its sporty swooping and stunning body really does offers the expected performance owing to its not so capable hybrid powertrain.
Thus, one might wonder why the Japanese car major is so reluctant when it comes to the green cars, as they are the need of the hour and currently the world’s favorites. Well, Honda is really not sitting idle, and on the contrary working full swing on the greener powertrains. One of Honda’s top officials said that the company is developing a range of new engines that will cater to the stricter emission standards and will be offered in the global markets in a decade’s time. That might sound too long, but Honda is definitely bracing up well for the long run.
The world is now all for the environmental friendly vehicles, especially the developed and the developing nations that are struck with high pollution rates are all very hard for new energy and more eco-friendly vehicles. Countries like China, USA and even developing countries like India are troubled by heavy pollution rates that need immediate attention and thus, stricter emission rules are being enforced apart from heavy subsidies on greener vehicles. U.S is also known for forcing car makers to produce more sustainable cars. The most prominent cities in large countries are all finding it difficult to get clean air to breathe and the primary pollutant is of course the high numbers of automobiles that run on the city roads day and night.
Honda also says that China will be adopting some most stringent fuel and emission regulations in the world. And everyone knows how important the largest car market China is for all the Japanese car giants. The Honda official also said that by 2025, Honda can’t expect to be able to sell any conventional fuel engines in the most prominent car markets of the world, and thus will be primarily selling hybrid models including the plug-ins.
Honda’s priority is to develop smaller and more powerful turbocharged engines to replace its current engine lineup. The conventional 4 cylinder engines will also be replaced by turbocharged 3 cylinder ones. The company will also be offering more hybrid as well as plug-in hybrid powertrains.
For the battery electric vehicle market also Honda has got everything planned. Honda Motor will bring in its all new fully green Fuel Cell car, Clarity that will soon hit the global markets. However, the Honda Clarity’s platform is also expected to be underpinning a luxury plug-in hybrid model and a full electric vehicle.
